Arts in Sacramento - The landscape of Sacramento's arts scene has changed in the past decade with a recession and two large-scale venues (Mondavi and Three Stages) that attract big name national acts and offer people in the suburbs a shorter commute. The Sacramento Ballet, the Sacramento Philharmonic, and the Sacramento Opera are the organizations taking the biggest hit. After years of deficit the ballet is performing this year's Nutcracker without a live orchestra for the first time and the philharmonic is considering merging with the opera to stay afloat.
Frankie the Dog - Frankie is a dog whose story shows how a terrible act by one person can summon the good will of many. The little terrier mix was tied to a tree near Foresthill with a broken jaw and broken paw -left for dead. Fortunately a camper found Frankie after days of searching and took him to Dr. Juricek at the Pinole Pet Hospital, who saved Frankie's life. The Placer County Sheriff's Department is currently searching for Frankie's abuser(s). We first spoke about Frankie (also known as Butch) during Insight's News Network Tuesday, October 2 and UC Davis veterinarians are currently reconstructing his face.
Nevada Union Debate Team - Connor Pardini of the Nevada Union High School Debate Team won the Junior Varsity title at the Long Beach tournament this past weekend. The Nevada County Bar Association is hosting a kick-off fundraiser for the Nevada Union High School Debate Team on Monday, October 8th at the Stonehouse Restaurant in downtown Nevada City.
Kushman by the Bottle - In the September installment of Kushman by the Bottle, Capital Public Radio's resident wine expert (and occasional guest host) Rick Kushman, talks about a couple of interesting happenings in the wine world, including a new wine bottle closure study from UC Davis, the use of the word "chateau" and harvest season.
